Prosper Fonteyn (born Leuven in 1854), a retired man from Leuven, settled in Tremelo around 1890. He had already set his sights on this marshy area, an old meander of the Demer River, several years earlier, and endowed it with a strip of land where it never flooded, a so-called Donk. He recruited volunteers to dredge this inhospitable area of peat pits and marshes, using flat boats and baskets. So many workers showed up to dig five ponds that he couldn't employ them all. These people received 1 franc per day for this. The peat was spread out on the ground. Local women collected the drained and dried peat with carts and wheelbarrows to use as fuel. Five ponds were created, and fish were immediately stocked in them. (Municipality of Tremelo)

There was little to be seen of the beaver dam here, or it was very well hidden in the snowy landscape.

The Laek Valley is a long reserve with plots along the Laak River. For several years now, a beaver family has been living near the Laak and Vijverbeek rivers. The beaver is a protected species and is of great importance to biodiversity in the Laek Valley. It restores water to the watercourses, thus literally bringing life back to the water. (Natuurpunt)

In 1782, the parsonage was built in the center of Tremelo in its typical Norbertine style. This building was centrally located in a large, walled garden with a monumental round-arched entrance gate on the street side, flanked by stables, a coach house, and sheds. Sadly, the wall and gate have long since disappeared, and the garden became the town square. Above the entrance door is the coat of arms of Simon Wouters. It was customary for the abbot builder to have it placed there. The parsonage remained inhabited until 1967. After that, the building fell into disrepair until restoration began in 1976. In 1978, the old parsonage became Tremelo's town hall. (Flickr)

The former town hall, located on the roundabout opposite the current town hall, was rebuilt after the destruction of Tremelo during World War I. The building was designed by renowned architect Jozef Fonteyn. The neo-traditional reconstruction is characterized by the use of stepped gables, cross windows, and decorative anchors. Above the door is a stone with the Belgian coat of arms and the inscription: "1914-1920, Unity is strength." (Tremelo trumps)

History: Neo-traditional town hall from the interwar period, designed by architect Jozef Fonteyn, located in the center of Tremelo. At the start of the First World War, resistance was offered from Tremelo and the surrounding region against the advancing Germans, allowing the field army to retreat to the fortress of Antwerp. From this region, sorties were also launched from the fortress against the German army, which occupied neighboring Werchter, among other places. Tremelo was particularly hard hit on August 19 and 28, 1914, when the German army carried out reprisals and set fire to several houses. The town hall and school building were destroyed in the arson attacks on August 28. After the war, the town hall was rebuilt on the same site in 1920 (see the coat of arms above the door) based on plans by architect Fonteyn. The reconstruction of the town hall was not registered until 1930. The building is constructed of brick but with the use of natural stone for the substructure, frames, and decorative elements. Characteristic of this neo-traditional reconstruction are the use of stepped gables, cross windows, and decorative anchors. The door, set in a profiled round-arched frame with a keystone, jambs, and dripstone, is accessible via a double staircase with an iron railing. Above the door is a stone with the Belgian coat of arms (lion) and the inscription: "1914-1920, Unity is Strength." Source: https://www.tremelo.be/product/1794/6-oud-gemeentehuis-tremelo
