Lonigo, an international city of wine, rises between plains and hills at the south-western end of the Berici hills. To the visitor it appears from afar with an unmistakable profile that completes the sinuous ridge of the Berici hills. Its forms are traced by historical architecture, symbols of a past to be discovered and admired which has nothing to envy of other much better known and visited centres.

Oratorio della Beata Vergine Addolorata, Grotte di Sarego In Sarego, in the locality of Grotte, you will find this beautiful oratory from 1840. The area around the church is very well cared for and there are the symbols of Christianity and at the same time typical elements of the Berici hills: an old vine at the top of the stairs and an olive tree at the end. Two stone angels greet the visitor and the faithful, while at sunset the sun illuminates the facade with a warm, soft and floating light. Lonigo, Province of Vicenza Lonigo is a northern Italian municipality (comune) in the province of Vicenza in Veneto. Lonigo or the district of Bagnolo is located on the Guà. The municipality borders the province of Verona. The municipality is located about 30 kilometers east of Verona and 30 kilometers southwest of Vicenza. The name of the municipality comes from the Roman family Leonici Flavii. The place was referred to as castro leunico and mentioned in documents as early as the 10th century. In the following centuries the towns of the area were under the rule of the city of Padua and the Republic of Venice. Text/Source: Wikipedia https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lonigo

Castle Prison Tower / Torre del Castello, Lonigo The first sources date back to 976, but it seems that the walls of Lonigo Castle were already built by the Romans (150-100 BC) who founded other colonies in Vicenza to cross the mountains guard and deal with the invasions of the Alemanni. The castle, under the Counts of Vicenza, was located on a hill along the Novo river. With the Scaliger and Venetian domains, the sieges and destruction stopped, but already in the 500s the castle of Lonigo was almost in ruins because the city of Vicenza had suspended its maintenance. Only the approximately 33 meter high keep and the Scaliger tower, which became a prison, are still preserved today. Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore, Duomo di Lonigo Church of the Holy Savior Cathedral of Lonigo The Cathedral of Lonigo is the parish church dedicated to the Most Holy Redeemer of Lonigo in the province of Vicenza, built between 1877 and 1895 in neo-Romanesque style. The church was built on the site of the city palace, in place of the church of San Marco and the convent of Poor Clares. The idea of building a new church arose at the end of a procession held in 1855 to plead for deliverance from cholera and the need to expand the existing church. Palazzo Pisani, Lonigo The building, commissioned by the Pisani brothers, was built in 1556 on pre-existing factories. Architect unknown, tradition attributes it to Michele Sanmicheli, while dalla Pozza Andrea Palladio worked in the Villa Pisani factory in Bagnolo in those years, despite stylistic evaluations not confirming any of the above hypotheses. The building consists of two parts: a central and two side wings, built in the '700. The living body is developed on four floors, two of which are noble, a rare aspect for the architecture of the time, and are surrounded by the rustic ashlar that accentuates the edges. Access to the square from Via Roma is through the rustic ashlar fornix that occupies two floors of the entire building. The portal is surmounted by a double-arched three-light window with soft ashlar on the ground floor, trabeata with ashlar bands with balustrades on the upper floor. The monumental balustraded staircase with triple ramps allows immediate access to the ground floor on the north side of the building. Continuing the ascent with your eyes, you can see how each floor is marked by a double basal band on the windows, as well as two coats of arms between the frame of the ground floor holes. Chiesa Vecchia, Lonigo Pieve or Old Church The facade of this church, completely remodeled in 1543 and later enlarged at the beginning of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century, is characterized by four agile pilasters with capitals that run along the wall and the high base of the architrave of the tympanum . The eighteenth-century bell tower of the church remains "the "Bell Tower" of Lonigo, revived after the return of the Concert of the Nine Bells in 1988/89. On the last three bells, installed at Easter 1989, the images of the patron saints of ancient Pieve were engraved: Cristoforo, Quirico, Giulitta and the Saint of great devotion of Vicenza, Maria Bertilla. The founding of a bell school has produced in Lonigo enthusiasts and devoted bell ringers who ring the prestigious bells on every occasion. The bell tower of the Old Church characterizes the profile of the village and is soaring in grace worthy of the eighteenth-century harmony that governs the whole Church. The interior is almost square, punctuated by powerful columns; Ten richly framed windows illuminate the classroom. Recent restorations make a visit to this church a tribute to eighteenth-century Verona painting. The current high altar, of neoclassical taste, replaces the original seventeenth-century altar that supported the mountain altarpiece now placed above the door of the sacristy. The baroque altars of the Pieve are miraculously intact and in their place each altar we see today had its seventeenth-century predecessor, from which some elements were used. All are in harmony with each other and with the architectural features of the church.
