In front of the majestic Visconti Castle of Pavia, in the heart of Bersaglieri Park, stands a monument that has always caught my attention. Hidden in the dense vegetation, a rocky outcrop symbolizing the island of Caprera bears a bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi. At the foot of the rock, the scene comes alive with profound symbolism. A female figure, Victory, violently breaks the chains of slavery, while an imposing marble lion represents the courage and strength of the people.

This beautiful square is simply called Piazza Grande by the locals: it is the lively centre of the city and a shopping district. It is surrounded by arcades full of cafés and shops. On the south side, towards the Duomo, stands the Broletto, the 12th century former town hall; behind one of the windows of the old building watches over the beloved statue of the Madonna di Piazza Grande (1604)
