Ancient Herculaneum was located on a plateau overlooking the sea, with two streams bordering its east and west sides, and Mount Vesuvius behind it. According to mythical tradition, it was founded by the hero Hercules returning from Iberia, while the historian Strabo traces its foundation to various phases of occupation by various Italic peoples. Herculaneum rebelled against Rome but was definitively conquered in 89 BC, becoming a Roman municipality.

A short distance past the entance the trail leads to this impressive overlook of the excavated section of the antique Roman town.

Smaller than Pompeii, but the buildings were preserved differently during the Vesuvius explosion. And this is where you should become curious and start researching 😉

This house with its front façade preserved up to the second storey, and the portal, windows and small lights which break it at various heights, offers one of the most complete examples of a private house façade at either Pompeii or Herculaneum. There is a stunning pool in the centre and the original doors are in situ.

The hall housed the College of Augustales, a civic order of freedmen charged with the organisation of the imperial cult. There are stunning frescoes on the walls!

Don't miss the side exhibition of the an old fishing boat just before the entrance to the site. Well worth the detour.
