The population of Stazzano, saved on the homonymous mountain, wanted to erect a chapel in honor of the Madonna di Monte Spineto. The current Sanctuary, with three naves and three altars, was commissioned by Monsignor Paolo Arese known as the "Saint", Bishop of the Diocese of Tortona between 1620 and 1644.
