The Lenti Band was a partisan brigade formed after September 8, 1943, around Agostino Lenti, a former Alpine officer, and Mario Manassero, a soldier in the Royal Army. They quickly became a point of reference and a rallying point for a dozen young men, draft evaders, from Camagna Monferrato. By the summer of 1944, the group had established links with other rebel groups developing in the area, eventually joining the Matteotti Brigades active in the area.

The profile of Camagna never goes unnoticed, especially to those who occasionally pass by: the dome of the Church of Sant’Eusebio dominates the panorama. The designs of the great dome of Camagna and the Church of Sant’Eusebio are the work of the architect Crescentino Caselli, originally from Fubine (AL), student and assistant of that Alessandro Antonelli already creator, among other works, of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin and the Dome of San Gaudenzio in Novara.

Why is there a Piazza Australia in Conzano? To solve the mystery we must go back in time more than a hundred years, to the end of the 19th century, during the Great Depression. The economic difficulties of the time pushed many people to abandon their homeland to seek fortune elsewhere. In that period, many Conzano residents moved to northern Queensland, Australia, to work cutting sugar cane: in this activity, in fact, the skills acquired in growing vines, typical of these areas of Monferrato, were useful. A strong bond has been maintained over time between the local Conzano community and the expatriate Conzano community: so in 1992 the town chose to pay tribute to its emigrant fellow citizens by changing the name of the square, from Piazza d’Armi to Piazza Australia.

Absolute brilliance. From so close then it is even more beautiful. You come across a few domes made like this and a passage from Camagna is almost mandatory just to admire its church. Pass by all of us at least once during your Monferrato tours.

This is also a very small town and when I passed, perhaps because of the bad weather and lunchtime, not a single person showed up. In the photo, the town square which houses the pharmacy, the grocery store, a post office and the parish church dedicated to Santa Lucia.
