On the summit plateau of Culmine, we find a recently opened refuge (May 2016) called La Casermetta. The refuge was created from the renovation of a military barracks built during the First World War but also used during the Second.

Chestnut groves are an iconic element of the Valtellina forest landscape. Thousands of them were cultivated in this mid-mountain area, because in the post-war period and in times of famine, the chestnut was an important source of sustenance. Near Piasci there is a chestnut tree with a picturesque trunk, which has placidly overlooked the Valtellina for centuries.

Small wooded road, sometimes rural, sometimes concreted, with slightly bumpy sections and accessible to anyone with any bike (except racing). Going up from Piazzalunga towards San Giuseppe there are some steeper ramps than in the opposite direction (in fact I imagine that the same ramp going down has a different flavour..), but nothing insurmountable
