Marilena Mottini was born in Dalmine, in the province of Bergamo, on 3 April 1954 to Severo and Virginia Vergani and was killed shortly after midday on 15 September 1969. She preferred to die rather than lose the purity that the Creator had given her. Two years later a chapel was inaugurated on the site of the massacre, where every year a mass in remembrance is celebrated.

Crespi d'Adda was an "Ideal Work Village" created by the industrial Crespi family in the late nineteenth century along the Adda for the workers of their textile factory. It offered employees homes, services and protection “from the cradle to the grave.” Only those who worked in the factory could live there. UNESCO has recognized it as a World Heritage Site for being an exceptional and well-preserved example of a Southern European workers' village.

The Crespi d'Adda cemetery was built between 1905 and 1908 based on a design by Gaetano Moretti. It has a square layout with a mausoleum for the Crespi family and simple tombs for the workers.
