The powder tower, which was built in 1241/1242, has a special significance as a monument because it serves as an outstanding example of how round towers can improve defensive structures. It is the only semi-circular shell tower with a conical roof in the mountain-side city fortifications. The towers on the mountain side, however, are merely shell towers, which only have three solid walls. Towards the city, the towers are open or only covered by a thin wooden wall. One disadvantage of such shell towers is their instability. The advantage is that they are cheaper to build and the enemy cannot entrench themselves in the tower and bombard the city. As the name suggests, the powder tower was used primarily to store gunpowder. A kind of vaulted cellar was subsequently built on the ground floor of the tower to store the gunpowder. Above the barrel vault, three battlements with slit loopholes can be seen with plaster edges and construction joints. The northern battlement was lost when the wall to the north collapsed. The powder tower is the only tower on the Michelfeld that was already integrated into the city fortifications in terms of planning and implementation. All other towers on the Michelfeld were subsequently added to the city wall. Another special feature from a defense perspective is that the powder tower stands on a rocky outcrop, from where the city wall changes direction and runs down into the Oberbach valley.
