To make the heat generated by the coal residue tangible for visitors to the heap, the Wunderhorn, designed by artist Erika Harbort, was erected on the Deutschlandschachthalde in 2012. The smoldering coal residue inside the heap emits heat, which is collected by geothermal probes at the base of the Wunderhorn.
