A worthwhile museum! I was particularly interested in the Gessel Gold Hoard Forum. There is a public tour every first Sunday of the month (starts at 3 p.m.; duration: 1 hour; cost: €7.00 per person (including museum admission); as of February 2025). Opening hours of the Syke District Museum: Closed on Mondays Tuesday - Saturday 2 p.m.–5 p.m. Sunday 12 p.m.–5 p.m.

Nice route, but the second part is mainly along field paths. Since we prefer forest paths, I would prefer to take my own route through the forest next time.

The history of the Syker Vorwerk goes back to an agricultural farm that was founded in 1580 at Friedeholz in Syke. Its task was to supply the garrison of the Syker Castle, a two-storey moated castle with a moat. After the Thirty Years' War, the castle buildings were extremely dilapidated and so the demolition of the fortress was ordered in 1633. An intensive construction phase began with the office building built in 1728/29 and the brewery built in 1736 on the farm grounds. While the residential building, which was built on the site of the former castle in 1709, remained the residence of the bailiff, the bailiffs lived on the farm from 1730 onwards. The renovation of the administrative buildings on the castle grounds began in 1738. The overall plan of the farm already shows eleven buildings in 1764.

The gorge-like valley was created by the mining of construction sand and was used in a variety of ways in the past. In the middle of the 19th century, the valley served as a training facility for the then newly founded rifle club. From the early 1920s to the 1960s, the Bremen theater used the Wolfsschlucht as an open-air stage. The origin of the name has not been finally clarified. Today the Wolfsschlucht is used again as an event location.

Interesting insights into our history. Before or after the Goldhort hike, the Goldhort Gessel forum is recommended. https://www.komoot.de/tour/1012215616?ref=wtd

3月 29, 2021, Kastenbein Beech Tree
The tree is made up of two European beeches (Fagus sylvatica), which stand close together and unite in the upper area to form a common trunk. It is not clear whether artificial interventions led to the development of this particular tree shape. According to legend, it should have the strength to fulfill people's wishes - for this you have to walk between the two legs. It owes its name to the former Syker forester Heinrich Kastenbein. He made sure that the tree was released. The later generations of foresters also made sure that the special beech tree had enough space to grow. https://www.weser-kurier.de/region_artikel,-Die-Buche-mit-der-angeblichen-Gabe-_arid,766922.html https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kastenbein-Buche_in_Syke

In the front part a typical local museum and not particularly spectacular. However, the newly built rear section, in which the exhibition on the Gessel gold hoard is located, is extremely exciting. The extension is also worth seeing from the outside, as it is architecturally quite successful.

In the Syker Friedeholz you can find various sculptures - so-called "forest path signs". Here it is a group of wooden installations: "Hand signals" by the Martfeld object artist Adam. For more information on the forest path signs "see: http://www.waldwegzeichen.syke.de
