The castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Lords of Sternenfels as their ancestral seat and was first mentioned in 1232. After the castle passed to the Lords of Liebenstein, it was pledged to Württemberg in 1320. Before the castle was demolished in 1778 and dismantled by 1780, it served as the seat of a forester and as a prison for poachers in the 17th century. The castle, of which only the rampart and moat remain today, was built from white Stubensandstein. A first observation tower was built in 1866, which became dilapidated and had to be blown up in 1966. A year later, in 1967, a 14-meter-high water tower with an observation platform in the style of a keep was built on the Schlossberg. The restaurant on the Heuchelberger Warte is in a wonderful location: It offers its guests a wonderful view, lots of different seating options outside and inside in tents, small cozy houses, glass houses... with furs and wool blankets... There is simply a spot to suit every taste in the beautifully decorated seasonal surroundings. The food is also delicious and is lovingly served by the friendly service staff. It is a pleasure to stop here. A restaurant like this can be recommended without reservation.

"Hölderlin in the roundabout" is the title of this work of art created in 2003 by the well-known sculptor Peter Lenk. It shows the young Hölderlin (sitting on the quill pen), Goethe, Schiller, a child, Nietzsche (on a bicycle), Duke Carl Eugen (at the top with the slain deer) and the only woman, "Diotima", a character from one of Hölderlin's novels. The location in the roundabout is intended to create a special three-dimensionality.

The Bollwerk Tower was connected to the Götzen Tower by the city wall. Both towers today bear witness to the massive fortifications that were built between the 13th and 14th centuries to defend the imperial city. The city was only open through the Brückentor, Sülmer Tor and Fleiner Tor.

For families with children, the visit is a must ☺️ It gets great and loud if the visit is possible during the feeding time of the monkeys 🐒. It is a huge spectacle 😌
