イップスはオーストリア最古の都市の一つで（1317年から都市権）、シュトゥルーデンガウの端という戦略的な場所にあったため、何世紀にもわたって、かつては危険な渦巻きのために、今日では生活の質のために、人々が立ち止まらざるを得ない場所でした。シュミードガッセやドナウレンダー沿いには、中世の都市要塞の残骸を見ることができます。イップスはかつて東からの侵略に対する強固な要塞でした。ユダヤ人墓地は中心部から少し離れたところにあり、かつてイップスに存在した重要なユダヤ人コミュニティを偲ばせます。

Behind the parish church

Of particular interest here are the "Donaulände" (Danube banks) and the historic buildings of the old town. There, you can take a historical tour of Ybbs. A charming city councilor presents sights such as the Mozart Hall, the Kilian Fountain, the Schiffmeisterhaus (Shipmaster's House), and the Princely Castle on interactive information panels.

The favorable location on the Danube and the leading trade routes led to the early development of a trading center on the Danube under the protection of a Carolingian castle settlement called "Eparesburg," as mentioned in the Raffelstetten Customs Ordinance around the year 905. After the Battle of Lechfeld on St. Lawrence's Day (August 10) in 955, this castle was expanded and provided with a chapel in honor of St. Lawrence. Later, it appeared as St. Michael's Chapel, popularly also known as St. Barbara's Chapel. This was probably destroyed by one of the great city fires (1716 and 1868) and today serves as a residential building (Kirchenplatz 6). Around the "Eparesburg" – in the area of today's Kirchenplatz – a (probably Slavic) scattered village gradually developed into a planned town, which was fortified in the 14th century. A moat and a ring wall were built around the town. The princely castle was built at what is now the Linz Gate. This allowed the parish church to expand next to the St. Barbara Chapel in the old – now abandoned – castle area directly on the Danube.
