"Lake Laach is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate and a popular tourist destination. In summer, a dip in the cool water is a tempting experience, and there are exciting things to discover on the eastern shore of the lake. Small bubbles rise up in the water - these so-called mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake (which, however, is not a maar like other volcanic lakes in the Eifel). About 13,000 years ago, there were several massive eruptions of the Laacher See volcano. First, rising magma hit water-bearing layers and triggered a steam explosion.
