The Saaltor is naturally oriented toward the Saale River. A mighty structure

St. Margaret's Church, with its striking bell tower, and Kahla's old town are situated on a 700 x 25-meter sandstone plateau where a mighty town castle stood in the Middle Ages. A special feature of the church is its late medieval four-bell chime. All bells, dating from 1415 to 1516, have survived the test of time and are preserved in their original condition. The oldest element in the church is the baptismal font, probably dating from the 12th century. The town church, with its distinctive 66-meter tower, dominates the townscape. The church's namesake is also the town's patron saint. Formerly a castle, the old town and the church now stand on a roughly 700-meter-long sandstone plateau that rises approximately 25 meters above the Saale River.
