The former wine shop "Alte Göhre" is one of the few remaining townhouses in Jena with a late Gothic timber-framed gable and curtain arch windows. Today it houses the city museum, founded in 1901.

The Jena City Museum was founded in 1901 and is dedicated to the city's history from prehistoric and early times to the 20th century. The name "Göhre" comes from Paul Göhre, who acquired the building in 1883 and ran a wine shop and restaurant there. The permanent exhibition extends over four floors and explores the city's and university's history, including important exhibits such as a Jena Luther Bible and the Jena Wartburg flag from 1816. The development of Jena through figures such as Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe, and Otto Schott is also explored. In addition to the permanent collections, there are regularly changing special exhibitions.
