In the 13th century, iron ore smelting began in Hirschbach using hammer mills that were powered by water wheels in the Hirschbach stream. The owners of the mills built a prestigious residential building in the Hammerhof at about the same time. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times during military conflicts. The current castle dates back to 1555.
