🏰 Rittersdorf Castle Rittersdorf Castle is one of the most valuable and best-preserved medieval sites in the region: a moated castle located in the municipality of Rittersdorf, just about three kilometers north of Bitburg, directly on the Nims River. The almost square structure is surrounded by a moat. Surrounded by the tranquil Nims river landscape, Rittersdorf Castle is a popular destination for history buffs, gourmets, and cyclists in the Eifel region.

🌊 The Nims River The Nims is an idyllic river that flows through the Bitburg-Prüm district in the Eifel region: The Nims is an approximately 61 km long left tributary of the Prüm. It rises near Weinsheim and flows south, past towns such as Schönecken and Bitburg, before joining the Prüm below Irrel.

Beautiful romantic ensemble of the Nims river with its weirs and fortifications and the mighty castle complex in the style of a moated castle.

Old St. Hubertus is the former parish church of the community of Wolsfeld. According to legend, St. Hubertus was converted in the Wolsfeld area. This resulted in a lively pilgrimage to the Wolsfeld Chapel of St. Hubertus. The first building was probably built in the 12th century. Around 1500, the chapel was expanded due to the pilgrimage. At the visitation in 1570, the chapel was a branch of Alsdorf and had four altars and four chalices. In 1803, Wolsfeld was elevated to a parish church. In 1926, the new Hubertus Church was consecrated in Wolsfeld.

The castle's origins lie in the Middle Ages: a round tower with loopholes faces the river side. However, Bollendorf Castle received its current appearance primarily in the Baroque period. Abbot Gregorius Schouppe, whose coat of arms and an inscription with the year 1739 can be seen above the portal of the main building, had the building modified in the 18th century and expanded to include the central building and the south wing. The former living quarters of the servants and the farm buildings are arranged in a semicircle around the courtyard. The castle complex also included the mill below the castle and a garden with a pavilion. In the 1970s, the Freundt family took over the complex, restored it piece by piece and converted it into a hotel-restaurant. Here you can be a guest in a historical ambience and, for example, stay overnight in a room with a Renaissance fireplace from the 17th century or dine in style in the new "Ehemaliger Pferdehof" restaurant. Fine facility that can probably be traced back to a follower of Charlemagne... at least that's what it says... I can't believe it anymore... it was before my time..🥴
