Impressive remains of the castle from the Frankish period. Today privately owned. Charlemagne is said to have been born here in the 8th century.

Since the 19th century, it has been assumed or even stated as a fact that the castle was built on the remains of a Roman fort, which presumably served to protect the Roman road from Trier to Cologne.[1] However, there is no evidence or even hints for this.[2] It should also be remembered that the castle is four to five kilometers from the Roman highway. According to local tradition, Bertrada, the mother of Charlemagne, lived in the castle, which suggests that he was born around 747. The existence of the castle was first documented in the 13th century as a state fortress of the princely imperial abbey of Prüm (compare the Middle Rhine Charter Book), but archaeological findings suggest that there were predecessor buildings to the castle complex.

The castle owes its name to Charlemagne's great-grandmother, Bertrada the Elder, who is said to have lived here with her son. Allegedly, Charlemagne is said to have even been born on Bertradaburg. There is the possibility to learn more interesting facts about the castle as part of one of the regular guided tours. Malberg Castle is a baroque castle in the Malberg community in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate. The palace complex is located above the village on the elongated headland of a basin on the large Kyllschleife in the Kyllburger Waldeifel. The landmark, visible from afar, is a baroque Palladio reception that is unique in Rhineland-Palatinate, as it is modeled on the Villa Valmarana in Italy designed by the famous architect. The complex owes its current appearance to Cologne's auxiliary bishop and vicar general Johann Werner von Veyder, who at the beginning of the 18th century had a simple Renaissance building redesigned and supplemented with various buildings in the Baroque style. Through the marriage of the heir's daughter Ernestine von Veyder, the castle came into civil possession. From 1989, the Kyllburg Association was the owner. Together with the Förderverein Schloss Malberg e.V., founded in 1996, she had the facility secured, repaired and restored piece by piece and with the help of funding in the millions. Today's owner is the Verbandsgemeinde Bitburger Land, into which the Verbandsgemeinde Kyllburg was merged in mid-2014.
