The reservoir provides flood protection for the surrounding communities, especially the town of Tirschenreuth. During periods of low rainfall, water stored in the lake is released. In addition, renewable energy is generated through hydropower using a Francis turbine. Energy production is managed by Bayerische Landeskraftwerke GmbH. The spiral turbine is fed with lake water via a 110-meter-long bottom outlet tunnel. The generator's average annual output is approximately 0.57 million kilowatt-hours.

The Liebenstein reservoir in the municipality of Plößberg covers an area of 40 hectares and has a normal water level of seven meters. Due to its scenic location, the Liebenstein reservoir has become a popular local recreation area. The area around the reservoir is ideal for boating, fishing, cycling, and hiking.

The Liebenstein reservoir was built in the 1960s to protect against flooding. The dam wall of the reservoir fits well into the landscape, the power plant with a Francis turbine generates electricity, an annual average of around 570,000 kWh.
