If you hike through the Owschlager Moor on the Jungfernstieg, you will quickly see that this is predominantly a valuable heather moor that emerged from a largely drained raised moor. As part of the "Schleswiger Vorgeest", the moor lies on the southern edge of a large, intensively used sandy area. The entire moor is covered by silting up peat patches. Raised bogs are extreme habitats in which only a few animals and plants can exist. That's why most of the animal and plant species in the raised moor are on the "Red List" of endangered plants and animals. The reasons for the disappearance or decline of many raised moor specialists lie in the drainage measures (peat extraction, conversion into agricultural land), as a result of which the originally much larger Owschlager Moor has shrunk to the current remaining area of approx. 86 hectares. The Hohner See is a lake about 12 km west of the town of Rendsburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein near the village of Hohn. The lake is about 71 hectares in size and up to 1.0 m deep. It is the last surviving Geest flat lake in the flooded landscape of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands.
