The military harbor of Peschiera had to be deepened by over 2 m in 1861 to accommodate a newly built gunboat for the Garda flotilla. The city on the south bank was hotly contested in earlier times: it had an important strategic importance because the Mincio, which flows to the south, was once navigable and provided an important connection to the Adriatic. Since 2017, the impressive fortress with tree-covered bastions and walls that protected the city from enemies has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title “Venetian Defense System of the 16th - 17th Century”.
