The Scaliger Castle of Malcesine was probably built before the birth of Christ, while other sources report a construction date of around 500 AD. The castle was destroyed by the Franks in 590 and subsequently rebuilt. Over the centuries, the rulers of this magnificent castle changed hands several times. In 1902, the castle was declared a national monument.

A beautiful, well-preserved castle. From there, you have a perfect view of the lake. However, we found the entrance fee to be expensive.

The Scaligero Castle of Villafranca di Verona is a castle of medieval origin. Inside the walls there are seven small towers called "Torresine" and two shielded towers, that is with only 3 edges. The largest or clock tower has stones with an inscription at its base and it is assumed that they came from an arch (or other building) dedicated to the emperor Tiberius. A curious peculiarity of the Scaligero Castle of Villafranca is that the battlements of the actual walls are of Guelph or flat shape, while the battlements of the keep and the shielded towers are of Ghibelline or "dovetail" shape.

The Castello Bar in Malcesine. Right in the middle of the action. But nice to sit and watch the crowds. Good prices and delicious snacks.☀️🍺🍷🍹👍

The Palazzo dei Capitani was built in the 13th century by the Scaliger family. Over the centuries it was destroyed and then rebuilt with great attention to detail. Today you can visit the large hall and the garden, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of Lake Garda. The historical complex is considered one of Malcesine's greatest treasures.
