The white wine of the same name, Soave, is named after the city. The place is said to have been founded around 500 AD by a tribe of the Suevi, from which the place name is derived. It belonged to the Sanbonifacio of Verona and passed to the Scaligeri in the 13th century. In the years that followed, Soave and its castle changed hands several times.
