The Jeetze is a small river that flows picturesquely through the old town of Salzwedel, creating a charming connection between nature and historic city architecture. Lovingly restored half-timbered houses stand along its banks, creating an idyllic townscape, especially in the center. Historically, the Jeetze served not only as a water source and transportation route, but also played an important role in the city's brewing industry. Today, the green banks, small bridges, and proximity to attractions such as the Neuperver Gate and the Danneil Museum invite you to stroll and linger, making the river a worthwhile part of the cityscape.

The former town hall of the old town of Salzwedel stands at the intersection of the long-distance trade routes Magdeburg-Lübeck and Hamburg as well as Braunschweig-Hitzacker (Elbe); built in 1509 to replace a previous building, it was used as a town hall until the two parts of the city were united in 1713; from 1855 it was used as a courthouse;

The Jeetze is a typical lowland river in the landscape of the "Western Altmark Plateau" with sandy-gravelly to sandy-mudgy bed substrates, which in many places is accompanied by one-sided riparian woodland, reed beds and moist perennial meadows. Grasslands dominate in the surrounding areas. Within the villages, the stream is regularly built up and anthropogenically over-shaped. Several weirs, bed slides and dams artificially regulate the water levels. Source: https://www.natura2000-lsa.de/front_content.php?idart=281&idcat=33&lang=1
