The value and significance of the Marksburg lie primarily in its complete preservation as a medieval fortification. For many visitors it is the epitome of a medieval castle. Its exposed location on a rocky cone 90 meters above the town of Braubach contributes to this. The imposing fortress with buildings mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries is staggered with a keep, several buildings, kennels and bastions. The typical interior rooms such as the castle kitchen, knights' hall, bower, chapel, armory, wine cellar, battlements and tower rooms are particularly worth seeing. They provide insights into medieval life.

Ehrenburg Castle stands in a prominent location—strategically advantageous in medieval times. Unlike many other buildings of that era, it remains in use to this day. Parts of the complex serve as a restaurant and hotel.

Thurant Castle with its two towers is unmistakable

The Ehrenburg was first mentioned in 1161. At that time, the German Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa settled a dispute between the Archbishop of Trier and the Count Palatine near the Rhine. Exactly 170 years later, in 1331, a conflict broke out between the Archbishop of Trier and the counts on the Moselle. During the so-called “Eltz Feud,” the houses of Eltz, Ehrenberg, Schöneck and Waldeck formed an alliance against Baldwin of Trier. He archbishop ultimately won the argument. With the “Eltzer Atonement”, a peace treaty was concluded and Count Palatine Rudolf received the Ehrenburg as a fiefdom. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, French troops blew up some parts of the Ehrenburg complex in 1689. A fairytale castle high above the Moselle. Around every corner you discover something beautiful. The entrance fee is very humane, as is the food and drink available at the kiosk. Everywhere beautiful seating areas that invite you to linger. You can drive your car straight to the parking lot or you can hike up the path from Alken past the white cross

The view over Alken to Thurant Castle and the Moselle is simply great. The castle is also a good starting point for longer tours.
