The Red Tower forms the border between the southern suburbs and Kirchhausen towards the Rhine and thus connects two construction phases of the city fortifications. At the Red Tower, the city wall bends at a right angle to the west towards the mountain side. On the Rhine side in a northerly direction is the smaller round tower, tower and house Schönburg. In the urban architecture of Oberwesel, the Red Tower is considered the counterpart to the Ochsenturm and - even if this is also a corner bastion - primarily has a representative function. This round tower should refer to the power and importance of Oberwesel. The plastered round tower once had two functions: on the one hand, like the ox tower, it was supposed to be a representative object or landmark of the city and on the other hand, as a corner bastion, it was supposed to protect the city from attacks. The tower, the gate and the city wall formed a seamless defense unit. For defensive purposes, loopholes and wide slit windows were let in on all sides, which were expanded or completely redesigned as part of the renovation work. Horn Castle is located about 600 m west of Horn in a marshy headwater area of the Klingelbach. The impressive 4-5 m high, round castle mound has a diameter of 40 m. A 9-12 m wide, in places 1.5 m deep moat surrounds the castle mound. A well is said to have been uncovered in the partly silted up, partly still swampy ditch.
