Places of longing and relaxation... and with luck you can find a bench to enjoy the view

After a constant up and down through the Hunsrück forest, it is nice to enjoy a view like this every now and then. This section of the Saar-Hunsrück Dream Loop offers hikers several of them.

Ehrenburg Castle stands in a prominent location—strategically advantageous in medieval times. Unlike many other buildings of that era, it remains in use to this day. Parts of the complex serve as a restaurant and hotel.

The Ehrenburg was first mentioned in 1161. At that time, the German Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa settled a dispute between the Archbishop of Trier and the Count Palatine near the Rhine. Exactly 170 years later, in 1331, a conflict broke out between the Archbishop of Trier and the counts on the Moselle. During the so-called “Eltz Feud,” the houses of Eltz, Ehrenberg, Schöneck and Waldeck formed an alliance against Baldwin of Trier. He archbishop ultimately won the argument. With the “Eltzer Atonement”, a peace treaty was concluded and Count Palatine Rudolf received the Ehrenburg as a fiefdom. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, French troops blew up some parts of the Ehrenburg complex in 1689. A really great and well-kept area with rest areas, panoramic loungers, swings, hammocks - a great local recreation area. Horn Castle is located about 600 m west of Horn in a marshy headwater area of the Klingelbach. The impressive 4-5 m high, round castle mound has a diameter of 40 m. A 9-12 m wide, in places 1.5 m deep moat surrounds the castle mound. A well is said to have been uncovered in the partly silted up, partly still swampy ditch. You can spend the night in the Ehrenburg, including in the medieval traveling carriages.

The ascent to the castle tower is worth it! A very nice all-round view is the reward.
