The wheelhouse is a medieval administrative building and is located centrally on the market square, taking up almost the entire north side. To the left of it is the former fish market, to the right the town hall and behind it the former Augustinian monastery with the inner courtyard of today's parish of St. John the Baptist.

The town hall is one of Memmingen's landmarks and is one of the city's most famous buildings. The historic, white building stands out on the market square - the heart of Memmingen's old town - in the middle of a collection of other beautiful historic houses.

The historic market square is the heart of Memmingen's old town. Here you will also find some of the city's most striking buildings, such as the town hall, the tax house or the Grand Guild, a former ball and social hall for major merchants.

The town hall in Memmingen in Upper Swabia is a multi-storey Renaissance building from the 16th century. It sets a strong urban accent and closes off the market square to the northeast. It is one of the most famous buildings in Memmingen. The town hall is located at the rear of the market square, framed to the west by the tax house, to the east by two small houses and the grand guild. Directly behind it is the oldest part of the city fortifications. In Schlossergasse, which adjoins the town hall to the east, are the Welfenhaus, built in the 1970s, and the Hexenturm (parts from the 12th century). The Welfenhaus is connected to the town hall by a passageway. In front of the town hall there is a neo-baroque market fountain (rebuilt in 1994). Around 800, a saint named Martin is said to have been killed on the square where the town hall stands. A council chamber was mentioned as early as the 14th century. In 1488, the old council seat was extended and then expanded several times (e.g. in 1522). The town hall at that time was a half-timbered building with open arcades. The current magnificent building was probably planned in 1565, because in that year two ribs of the wheelhouse were demolished. But it was not until 1589 that the plan of the city's master builder, Johann Jakob Ehinger, was realized. The construction cost the then unimaginable sum of 30,000 guilders (the city budget was around 90,000 guilders). The town hall already had its current shape at that time, with a high gable flanked by two small bay windows. In the 18th century, when the nobility acquired country castles, the city republic did not want to be left behind and also built a magnificent building as a landmark of Memmingen. The town hall was redesigned in the Rococo style according to designs by Johann Georg Knoll and Jakob Mitteregger. In 1764-1765 the gable was given its curved profile and the windows were framed with stucco decoration. The portal triad was given carved door wings. The skylights of the side entrances have since been decorated with the coats of arms of the city and the Privy Council. The large central gate even allowed freight wagons to enter the two-aisled vaulted hall. The old council chamber was located in the basement of the town hall. It is so deep that the temperature there is always a cool 4 °C. A "renewal of the facade" can be proven for the year 1878, with which the town hall also received a clock that is clearly visible from the market square......
