The first evidence of settlement dates back to the Stone Age, as demonstrated by finds along the Iller River near Ferthofen. Records only reappear in the 4th century, as the Augsburg library was destroyed several times, resulting in the loss of documents. Mammingin was first mentioned in 1128. The city walls, towers, and gates were last expanded in 1445.

Duchess Mauritia Febronia of Bavaria (1652-1706) bequeathed a replica of the Altötting image to Christoph Imperial Count von Muggenthal, Lord of Bedernau. In 1721, he had the image of the Mother of God, highly venerated by the Duchess, placed in a chapel in his orchards, today known as Baumgärtle. Starting in 1726, a church and monastery were built, where Franciscans lived and supervised the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage flourished until the beginning of the 19th century. During the secularization of 1803, the monastery was closed; the church was sold for demolition in 1827. All that remained was the Chapel of Grace with the image of grace. Nevertheless, pilgrims continued to come to Baumgärtle. Several attempts were made to reestablish a monastery there. In 1871, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood received permission from Bishop Pancras of Augsburg to settle in Baumgärtle. In 1882/83, a new pilgrimage church was built and consecrated under the title "Presentation of Mary" (patronage feast on November 21). After 1945, the flow of visitors and pilgrims to Baumgärtle soon increased again. In 1949, the missionaries introduced the celebration of Fatima Day on the 13th of every month, which draws numerous believers. A very beautiful old town with numerous places to linger. Unfortunately, however, there is a large number of shops dying out, as in many city centers.

The wheelhouse is a medieval administrative building and is located centrally on the market square, taking up almost the entire north side. To the left of it is the former fish market, to the right the town hall and behind it the former Augustinian monastery with the inner courtyard of today's parish of St. John the Baptist.

The town hall in Memmingen is a multi-story Renaissance building from the 16th century. It sets a strong urban accent and closes off the market square to the northeast. It is one of the most famous buildings in Memmingen.

This great market square with numerous restaurants and sights is located in the middle of Memmingen's old town.

Another thing that is a matter of taste. The fishing day with the stream fishing on Saturday at 8 a.m. and the Friday night, which as a local you should have spent all night in the various pubs. I did that twice. The Wallenstein Games are celebrated every four years with a huge camp life in the city's green spaces. Wallenstein stayed in MM in 1630, but at the end of his military career. The medieval festival is one of the largest in Europe and well worth seeing.
