マイートンには12世紀初頭から橋が存在していましたが、中世の橋は繰り返し崩壊したり破壊されたりしました。1354年までに中世の橋は再び崩壊し、何世紀にもわたって渡河は信頼できないものでした。現在の鉄橋は、マイートン・ホールのヘンリー・マイルズ・ステイプルソンによって発注され、1868年に完成しました。ここはまた、1319年の「ホワイト・バトル」とも呼ばれるマイートンの戦いの場所でもありました。これは、1319年9月20日に経験豊富なスコットランドの襲撃者によって圧倒された、主に聖職者によって率いられたイングランド民兵隊にとって悲惨な敗北でした。スウェール川沿いのマイートン・オン・スウェール近くの牧草地で戦われ、その結果、エドワード2世はバーウィックの包囲を断念せざるを得ませんでした。
