この地域は1989年3月30日に保護区に指定され、1997年に拡張されました（面積約138ヘクタール）。蛇行する川、中州、淵、攻撃斜面や滑走斜面を持つ、自然のままの急流の小川と、隣接する湿地帯、湧水地、森林を保護しています。植物相（5月〜7月が見頃）：

何世紀にもわたって、この場所は（Pinnowと共に）貴族のフォン・マルツァーン家に属していました。Pinnowが主領地で、Duckowが副領地でした。Ostpeene沿いのいくつかのマルツァーン家の領地は、いわゆる「säben Dörper」（7つの村）を形成しており、これはメクレンブルクの領土に囲まれたポメラニアの飛び地でした。1937年、これらの村はDemmin郡からメクレンブルクのMalchin郡に移管されました。

Ostpeeneは最終氷期の侵食谷として形成され、周囲の底モレーンを最大20mの深さまで削り込みました。その過程で地下水層が露出し、湧水域として現れ、希少なグライ土壌（例：石灰質湧水グライ）を形成しています。急な勾配のため、この小川は中世から水車用の水として利用されてきました（地域内には複数の水車の跡や記念碑があり、Gielower Mühleは現在も存在しています）。三十年戦争後、農地は休耕地となり森林化しましたが、中世の畝状耕作地の跡が今も確認できます。

この湖は、「Torgelower See」（約3,340ヘクタール、Tiefwarenseeとその周辺も含む）景観保護区の一部です。主に、氷河期に形成された、古いオークやブナの木々が立ち並ぶ公園のような景観が保護されています。この地域はWarenの近郊レクリエーションエリアとして機能しており、多くの絶滅危惧種の動植物、特に水鳥の生息地となっています。

Unfortunately, it is not open to the public! The Groß Gievitz manor house is a baroque manor house situated in an idyllic park. The original building probably dates from the first half of the 18th century (around 1730), while the surviving stables were built around 1700.

The inspector's house, one of the best-preserved buildings of the former estate, was built in 1756 and remodeled in 1908. The listed building still features original stucco ceilings and parts of the wood paneling.

The landscape park of Varchentin Castle was laid out in 1838 by the Prussian garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné. The park extends to the lake and includes an artificial canal connecting the Great and Little Varchentin Lakes, which, however, has dried up due to a lowered groundwater level.

...presumably, the Benitz watermill was located here. The village of Benitz was already deserted in the 15th century. According to reports, oak posts from the mill were still visible in the mid-18th century, and the adjacent forester's meadow may have been the mill pond.
