A section of the 26-kilometer-long Danevirke, known locally as the Margarethenwall, runs through the municipality of Ellingstedt. The Danevirke is the largest fortification of the Viking Age and at the same time the largest fortification and the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe.

Here the blades of grass grow in nature, about 40 cm high 😀. In spring, the reconstructed fortification, Schanze 14, certainly looks more impressive.

Very impressive building, rightly a world heritage site!!!

Margarethenwall is part of the Haithabu-Dannewerk nature reserve and, like so many other interesting places in the region, dates back to the Viking Age.

With the Danewerk, the Danes marked the southern border of their empire with a rampart. This was to prevent Germanic Saxons, Slavs and Franks from encroaching north.
