9月 14, 2025, Historisch Centrum van Veere
Veere is located on the former island of Walcheren in Zeeland. It's a city with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Once a thriving trading center, the city has retained its medieval charm while bearing silent witness to many historical events. A stroll through the city center reveals not only the city's centuries-old history but also the unique way in which culture is interwoven with daily life. (Wandel.nl)

The Veersedam, or Veersegatdam, was built in 1961 at the mouth of the Veerse Gat to protect parts of Walcheren, Noord-Beveland, and Zuid-Beveland from a potential new disaster. The construction of the dam, which was intended to connect Walcheren with Noord-Beveland, was not easy. The Veerse Gat was larger than the Zandkreek, and a strong current occurred at every high tide. More than 70 million m3 of water flowed through the mouth at both low and high tide. If the hole were closed with the same caissons as at the Zandkreek Dam, the current would eventually become too strong (the smaller the hole to be closed, the greater the current, as the same amount of water is forced through a smaller opening). The solution was the so-called "pass caissons," which, unlike the unit caissons of the Zandkreek Dam, were open. The section where the dam was to be built was first raised by spraying sand, and then a "sill" of stones was placed on which the caissons could stand firmly. The caissons were then placed one by one into the 320-meter-wide hole. At the time of installation, the caissons were still open, allowing water to flow freely, and only when the flow was minimal were the gates in the caissons lowered. Since the Zandkreek was already closed, a new lake, the Veerse Meer, was created. Much would change in this lake, especially as the saltwater slowly became brackish. Wonderful natural landscape with excellent cycling and hiking trails. The size of the entire nature reserve is surprisingly large and always offers a reason to marvel and enjoy. Super beautiful when the heathland is in bloom

The Breskens lighthouse from 1868 is the oldest existing cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands and one of the most iconic buildings in West Zeeland Flanders. This octagonal, black and white painted tower was built in 1866-1867 according to a design by the Dutch architect Quirinus Harder. Nieuw Sluis Lighthouse is located on the sea wall at the entrance to the Western Scheldt, has a height of 28.4 meters and has five floors. It is part of a series of lights that mark the end of the Scheldt and guide shipping traffic between the North Sea and Antwerp. In 2011 the lighthouse was decommissioned and demolition threatened. Thanks to the efforts of the Breskens Lighthouse Foundation, the national monument was completely renovated in 2015 and opened to visitors. The entrance fee is €2.00 per person. Children aged 5 to 12 are admitted under supervision for €1.00. Given the small space and the steep stairs, the lighthouse is not suitable for children under 5 years old and no more than 15 people are allowed at a time. The lighthouse is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. until October. Info: www.vuurtorenbreskens.nl

Few villages are as beautiful as Renesse, close to the sea. The dunes are special nature reserves. And more than 17 kilometers of clean, wide beach. It is therefore logical that it is a popular holiday destination. You can enjoy a great day in and around Renesse. Enjoy a nice walk, go to the beach or sit on a terrace. And then there is plenty of entertainment for the children. Renesse used to be a popular seaside resort. From the beginning of the twentieth century, bathers came to 'bathe on the beach'. The first summer houses were built then and there was a lot of camping. Renesse is a popular seaside resort for good reason. You will find everything here for a wonderful beach day. 5月 2, 2023, Vroongronden Nature Reserve
Open, bumpy, birds, flowers and butterflies. These are the Vroon grounds between Renesse and Haamstede. You will find 'high' dry kops dunes with dune grasslands, wet low rifts and creeks. Here and there are pools from which frogs croak in the spring. The Vroon grounds are popular with deer and fallow deer: the animals are mainly active at dusk. Go into the area around that time. The Veerse Gatdam is the dam with which the Veerse Gat was closed on April 27, 1961. This created the Veerse Meer. The Veerse Gatdam is the third structure of the Delta Works. The N57 runs over the dam. The dam is 2.8 kilometers long and connects Walcheren with Noord-Beveland. The dam was partly constructed as an asphalt-covered dike on the Plaat van Onrust. For the remainder, submersible passage caissons were used. For the construction of these caissons, a dock was constructed between Veere and Vrouwenpolder. The caissons contained openings so that the tidal flow could continue during the construction of the dam. This prevented the current from becoming stronger as construction progressed. Only at the end of construction were the gates lowered simultaneously, closing the dam in one fell swoop. Due to the construction of the Veerse Gatdam, the town of Veere is no longer connected to the open sea. The Veere fishing fleet left for nearby Colijnsplaat just before the dam closed. The Veerse Meer is now a popular water sports resort, especially for windsurfers.
