A signalman's house, a lineman's house, a crossing guard's house, or in Switzerland, a barrier guard's house, was usually built at level crossings between railways and roads, paths, or at block posts, switches, and junctions so that the responsible railway employees, colloquially known as signalmen, could live directly next to their workplace. Other signalmen's houses, such as those on the Gotthard line, were built for signalmen, whose job it was to inspect the section of track up to the next signalman's house daily and to perform certain track maintenance work, or for crossing guards. The construction of the signalmen's houses in Zellwald began with the construction of the line in 1872.
