She published her first novel, Elizabeth, anonymously. The book's success led her to sign subsequent works as "Author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden," which became her trademark. The novel Christine (1917) was written under a pseudonym, Alice Cholmondeley.[2] Her real name only began to become popular with the appearance of modern reissues and translations of her works, now signed as Elizabeth von Arnim.[2]

In 1945, the building burned down as a result of the war. The choir and nave were rebuilt starting in the 1950s.
