Since the redesign of the medieval town center, the Media Tower, which stands on the site of the old town hall, has formed the centerpiece of the square. At 12.27 meters high, the tower symbolizes the first documented mention of the town of Bischofswerda in 1227. The Waldschlößchen Bridge is one of Dresden's most famous Elbe crossings—and not just because of its views. Its construction sparked much controversy in the 1990s and even led to the Dresden Elbe Valley losing its UNESCO World Heritage status. Today, it connects the city's districts and offers sweeping views over the Elbe meadows and toward the Old Town.

In 2007, the Old Market Square was completely redesigned, with a media tower displaying constantly changing messages. A metal prism was installed in this tower, controlled by a light barrier.
