At the village of Terheijden, the Mark makes a sharp turn to the west. Here, the connection with the Markkanaal and the boathouse of the Breda Rowing Club is located. At Standdaarbuiten, the Mark changes into the Dintel, after which the river water flows into the Western Scheldt via the Volkerak, the Rhine-Scheldt Canal and the Bath Spuikanaal. Tributaries of the Mark include the Kleine Mark, the Hollandsche Loop, the Merkske, the Chaamse Beek, the Galderse Beek, Heerlese Loop, the Kerzelse Beek, the Leijloop, the Molenleij and the Strijbeekse Beek. The Spanjaardsgat consists of two defense towers, built by Count Hendrik III. The left tower is called 'Granaattoren'. Because carrier pigeons were kept in the right tower for William of Orange, it was given the name 'Duiventoren'. The towers now serve as chapels and the Duiventoren also houses the information center of the Dutch Defense Academy, of which the KMA is a part. Many people think that this is where the ruse with the peat ship took place in 1590, but that happened a little further, at the current sports field of the KMA. Peat skipper Adriaan van Bergen then recaptured the Castle from the Spaniards by smuggling soldiers of Prince Maurits into the castle walls in his ship. The Three Brug Streets consist of the Korte Brugstraat, the Lange Brugstraat and the Tolbrugstraat. The streets start at the Grote Markt and continue to the Haagdijk near the harbor. If you walk down the street you will come across many different types of shops, from fashion to lifestyle and electronics. You will also pass the entrances of the Barones and 't Sas.
