アヴェルノ湖は、ポッツオーリ近郊にある火山性の湖です。神話によれば、古代にそこから立ち上っていた硫黄の噴気のため、冥界への入り口とされています。この湖は、シビュラに導かれたアエネアスが、死者の国へ到達するために『アエネイス』の中で訪れる場所です。歴史的には、アウグストゥス時代に、近くのルクリヌス湖と共に、内海を形成していた軍港であるポルトゥス・ユリウスの所在地となりました。後に、入り口の土砂の堆積が容易になったため放棄され、プテオリの商業港の停泊地複合施設であるリパ・プテオラナに組み込まれました。その岸辺には、いわゆる「アポロ神殿」が建っていますが、これは実際には広大な温泉複合施設の一部であり、天然の熱源を利用するためにフリグレア平野に建設された数多くの施設の一つです。

Beautiful volcanic lake with a very simple and comfortable circular tour, during which it is possible to admire local fauna and flora. I recommend it together with the circular tour of Monte Nuovo to have a view of the volcanic panorama of the Campi Flegrei area.

Everyone will wonder why it is called the “Birds’ Path”? The name is due to a rich and documented presence of different species of bird fauna, protected by the Campi Flegrei Regional Park Authority and the municipal administration of Bacoli. And then because there is a large presence of seagulls that nest and that after having fluttered over the sea, hunting for fish, return to their nests. A particular characteristic of this path is, also, the sudden transition from a Mediterranean vegetative area to a more wooded area. These are the types of plants that can be encountered: bougainvillea, broom, downy oaks, wild olive trees, holm oaks, mastic trees, euphorbia, oregano, Venus’ navel, wild leek, butcher’s broom, sarsaparilla, wallflower and asphodel.
