In the 12th century, the "Freienwalde Castle" stood on a small spur above the town. In the 19th century, an artificial ruin was built on the now-defunct castle, which today serves as a lookout point. Only the remains of the moat remain. This ruin (the former Freienwalde Castle) is connected to the Bismarck Tower (standing on the remains of the former Malchow Castle) northwest of here by old tunnels. The castles and later lookout towers/points served as part of a defensive system along the edge of the Oderbruch and protected against enemies from the east. Today, one can enjoy a beautiful view of the town and into Bruch from here.

Numerous trails branch off from the plateau, including to Lake Baasee, the Brunnentalweg trail to the mud bath, and many more. Thus, the hut, with its fireplace and fuel, not only offers shelter from the elements or in the event of an accident, but also usually welcomes people.

No, you shouldn't turn back here, but you can certainly pause for a moment. The young Hans Keilson hiked this far with his father before both turned back to be home in time for lunch. Hans Alex Keilson, honorary citizen of Bad Freienwalde, lived here until he fled to the Netherlands in 1936, where he was persecuted by the Nazis as a Jew, writer, and doctor.
