Bunker at Bridge over the canal towards Russendorp

Russendorp is located in a tapered part of the Bergeijkse Heide that once belonged to the former Dutch municipality of Luyksgestel but was exchanged with Belgium in 1843 for a strip of the Bladelse Heide. A small settlement was created of people who were going to cultivate the heaths there but were so far removed from their villages that they built temporary dwellings of sod, consisting of pitrus. These piping or pitrus sods are called 'Russians' in Dialect. The name has nothing to do with residents of Russia.

Russendorp nowadays partly falls in the municipality of Lommel and Mol.
