Until 1972, lime and chalk were mined in the Holtug chalk quarry - today the area is designated as a Natura 2000 protected area by the EU. In a large water hole in the disused chalk quarry, you can see protected water salamanders and pond frogs. Rare plants grow on the calcareous soil, and you can also find fossils of sea urchins, squid and sharks in the soft, white chalk.

A winding path leads down to the Öresund.

We took a small limestone with us as a souvenir. It now lies on our window and reminds us of this beautiful place.

Holtug chalk quarry is Natura 200 area. A protected area within the European Union. Until 1972 lime and chalk were mined, today the area is considered a very special nature experience. Because the calcareous soil and the deep holes created by human hands offer many rare animals and plants such as the Northern Crested Newt and the Good Lunar New Moon, good living conditions.

In the former chalk quarry you can also find fossils of sea urchins, cuttlefish and sharks in the soft white chalk. Keep in mind, however, that you are only allowed to cut the chalk and limestone blocks that lie loose in the quarry or on the beach.
