In Leina, the first church was begun in the 12th century with the construction of a late-Gothic choir. Later, around 1600, further modifications were made. Around 1739 a new building was built on gothic foundations. The church got its present appearance. The church is equipped with a large bronze, a medium steel and a small steel bell. The organ is a work by Johann Heinrich Rupert from 1740 with 18 stops on two manuals and a pedal. It was restored in 2004.

The parishes of Sundhausen, Boilstädt, Leina and Gospiteroda joined forces on January 1, 2014 to form the Evangelical Lutheran Boxberg Parish of Sundhausen. It belongs to the Gotha parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.
