The Garz castle wall is a reminder of the former settlement by Slavs.
The hilltop castle, built in the middle of the 12th century, was subjected to several test excavations and soundings from 1725 onwards, which revealed Slavic ceramics and a large number of iron finds, among other things. The excavation results, as well as written records, prove that the West Slavic Ranen had a princely seat here. However, this castle, built as a wood-earth construction, disappears far behind the importance of the Karenz temple castle near Venz. With the renewed construction of a castle on the site of the former Slavic ring wall, Garz, as a princely seat and young town, only gained more power and influence on Rügen around 1300.

"Southwest of the small town of Garz in the south of Rügen lies a rampart that goes back to the Slavic tribe of the Ranen (also Rujanen or Rugianer)." About 200 meters long and 140 meters wide, the former Wallburg extends in an oval shape with a central access in the west side In the direction of Renz to the south of Garzer See, the Wall is slightly heaped up and its height above the city is up to 15 meters.

In the wake of the migration of peoples from Eastern and Eastern Central Europe, the Slavic tribes settled east of the great rivers Elbe and Saale since the late seventh century. The Ranen came to Rügen. As late as the middle of the 12th century, there was an independent tribal society here, which entered the historiography through piracy as the "horror of the Baltic Sea". Visible witnesses of this warlike people are their existing castle walls, one of the largest and best preserved of them is in Garz. "(Source s.u.)
