Bike Touring Highlight
The mountain castle rises on a sandstone rock about 40 meters above the Saale. The facility consists of the fore- and the fortress, each with a nearly rectangular floor plan. Between the two is a kennel, through which a chamber gate with Romanesque canopies leads in the Torlaibung. Worth seeing is especially the 32 meter high, mountable keep (3.60 m wall thickness, original high entrance in 8 meters height) with its beautiful fireplace in the tower chamber and the guardhouse at the top of the tower. The tower dates back to around 1230. The last remaining building in the Kernburg was called a court house - today as a knight's hall, where weddings also take place. Large parts of the defensive walls around the fortress and the fortress are still present.
