This viaduct was built in 1874 and spans 541 feet (165 m) over the remains of mineral mines. The views from the viaduct span across to Meldon Dam and reservoir to the south west. At almost 164 feet (50 m) high, the views of this dam are as impressive as the original feat of engineering. Down the valley is Meldon Pool — the old limestone mine that still has two lime kilns. The trip up to this spot is worthwhile purely for the view of Dartmoor from such a well placed vantage point. Whether industrial history or natural beauty inspire you, you won't be disappointed.

Meldon Viaduct is one of only two wrought and cast iron truss viaducts in the country and is now protected as a Scheduled Monument.

There is all-year-round access to the top of Meldon Viaduct by means of The Granite Way, a concrete cycle track and footpath which traverses the viaduct and extends from Okehampton Station to Lydford.
