The ruin Kollmitz is one of the largest medieval castle ruins in Lower Austria.
It was built to defend the border against Bohemia and stands on a rock, which is surrounded by the Thaya. At the narrowest point is still the "Bohemian wall", a forward attachment far outside the actual castle. Until 1611, the fort was owned by the barons of Hofkirchen, who were expelled during the Reformation period.
Often the owners then changed, the loss of function as the center of control led to the ruin of the castle. The castle was not destroyed in any war, but abandoned in 1708 by its owners.

Both towers (keep and hunger tower) are accessible. A small exhibition (museum) completes the program.
