This impressive steel bridge, known locally as "Bschüttistäg", was built in the early 1970s as a sewer bridge for the Thunersee sewage treatment plant, which was put into operation in Uetendorf in 1973. Today, 36 communities from the Kander, Simme and Zulg catchment areas and the lower Lake Thun belong to it.
Here, the Kander has already eroded to a depth of over 35 meters. The Glütschbach valley probably looked like the way the riverbed with its gravel banks and meandering river courses looks today over 300 years ago: a gravel wasteland with little vegetation. Downstream, you can see steeper and flatter sandstone sediments, deposits of interglacial primeval Kanders that have shaped the landscape over the last 500,000 years.
