Visiting Waldsassen means seeing a monastery town and watching a magnificent baroque basilica. There is also the famous monastery library, the nature experience garden and the Stiftlandmuseum and the magnificent beer garden in the former royal Bavarian forestry house, directly in front of the basilica.
Around the year 1133 Margrave Diepold III. the monastery Waldsassen, brought Cistercian monks and equipped it with possessions. The monastery Waldsassen quickly gained importance and power. It acquired the greatest merits to the colonization and upward development of a vast stretch of land in the northern Gaul, which reached into Bohemia. The revolutionary events of the Reformation shook the foundation Waldsassen in its existence and finally led to the extinction of the monastic life. It was not until 1864 that the Cistercian Order was able to buy back part of the previous monastery property, but without the basilica, which had been taken over by the Catholic parish. The Cistercian monastery has been under the direction of an abbess since 1925. It is particularly active in the school education of the youth. The current director is structurally doing a lot for the preservation of the magnificent monastery complex, the interior of which shields itself rigorously. So a look in the well-kept indoor facilities is denied.

The monastery basilica Waldsassen was built from 1685 to 1704 as a monastery church of the Cistercian nuns of the abbey Waldsassen. The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Meanwhile, the church is also a parish church, under the patronal feast of the Assumption and St. John Evangelist.
Important church builders such as Georg Dientzenhofer and Abraham Leuthner created this pillar basilica one of the most remarkable baroque churches in Bavaria. The equipment involved artists from all over Europe. The construction was completed under the direction of Abbot Albert Hausner. The church was consecrated in 1704 by Auxiliary Bishop Franz Ferdinand von Rummel. During the secularization in 1803, the monastery church was handed over to the Catholic community as a parish church. On December 18, 1863, the monastery was re-established as a priory of the Cistercian Sisters of Bishop Ignatius of Senestrey in Regensburg and repopulated by Cistercian nuns of the abbey Seligenthal in Landshut. In 1969, Pope Paul VI. the collegiate church to the basilica minor.

One of the most magnificent baroque churches in southern Germany
        .
The first glance into the interior of the church shows that our basilica is rightly one of the most important and magnificent baroque churches in southern Germany.
After the Thirty Years' War, the church was one of the first really demanding new buildings and - alongside the Passau Cathedral - the largest religious building in Bavaria at the time. Abbot Martin Dallmayr (1612-1690) initiated the new building, Abbot Albert Hausner (1690-1710) was able to complete it. Both won well-known artists of their time.

The architects Abraham Leuthner (1640-1710), Georg Dientzenhofer (1643-1689) and Christoph Dientzenhofer (1655-1722), the plasterer Giovanni Battista Carlone (1642-1718), the sculptor Karl Stilp (1668-1735 / 36), the Painter Johann Jakob Steinfels (1651-1730) and many more.
Their brilliant cooperation created a church space of special harmony and charisma, for the greater glory of God and for the joy of the people who celebrate worship here and attend this church.
