Forest elephants once lived here 120000 years ago.
Since the 1920s, bone finds of the extinct forest elephants, which could grow up to four meters, have been recovered here. To date, this is the most complete skeleton found so far.

A forest elephant from bygone times was dug up in the old marl pits. The finds are in the museum in Verden. Here is a sign with some information.
